In our class we have been discussing the purported link between vaccination and autism. While most of my students recognized that the research has found NO LINK between vaccination and autism, several called this a “controversial topic.”
This should no longer be a controversial topic. The research is clear and consistent-there is no link between vaccination and autism. There is a link, however, between not having a child vaccinated and the spread of childhood diseases. Parents should know that the decision not to have their child vaccinated can effect not only their child but the children of other families. It is understandable that many parents feel confused and unsure about vaccination. Hopefully they will consult with their doctor and make the best choice for their family as well as the families of others in their community.
